Description
Thuja occidentalis ‘Little Gem’ Arborvitae is a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub prized for its dense, rich green foliage and naturally conical shape, making it an excellent choice for small gardens, foundation plantings, and container landscapes. Originating from the eastern regions of North America, this cultivar is a dwarf selection of the native Eastern Arborvitae, valued for its hardiness, adaptability to a variety of soil types, and tolerance to urban pollution. ‘Little Gem’ typically reaches a modest height of 3 to 5 feet, maintaining a tidy, narrow profile that requires minimal pruning, which adds to its appeal for low-maintenance landscapes. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and provides year-round interest with its bright green, scale-like leaves that take on a bronze cast in winter. This variety is also deer-resistant and relatively pest-free, enhancing its desirability for residential plantings. As a versatile and resilient evergreen, ‘Little Gem’ has been recognized in horticultural circles for its reliability and aesthetic value in small space gardening.
