Description
Taxus x media ‘Hicksii’, commonly known as Hicks Yew, is a popular evergreen shrub valued for its dense, upright growth habit and rich, dark green foliage that retains color year-round. This hybrid yew is a cross between English Yew (Taxus baccata) and Japanese Yew (Taxus cuspidata), developed for its superior hardiness, adaptability, and ease of maintenance. Originating from selections made in the early 20th century, Hicks Yew has become a staple in landscape design for hedges, foundation plantings, and privacy screens due to its natural columnar form and moderate growth rate. It thrives in a variety of soil types and tolerates shade to partial sun, making it versatile across USDA zones 4 through 7. The plant is also deer-resistant and relatively pest- and disease-tolerant, contributing to its enduring popularity. Although not noted specifically for formal awards, Hicks Yew’s consistent performance and classic aesthetic have earned it a trusted reputation among landscapers and gardeners alike.
