Description
Sesleria caerulea, commonly known as Blue Moor Grass, is a perennial ornamental grass prized for its striking blue-green foliage and fine-textured, tufted form. Native to the mountainous regions of Europe, particularly the Alps and Pyrenees, this cool-season grass thrives in well-drained soils and enjoys partial to full sun exposure. Blue Moor Grass typically reaches heights of 12 to 18 inches, forming dense clumps that provide excellent ground cover and erosion control on slopes or rocky gardens. Its narrow, arching leaves emerge with a distinctive steel-blue hue that adds unique color contrast in mixed borders and rock gardens throughout the growing season. In spring, it produces slender flower spikes that are relatively inconspicuous but add subtle vertical interest before fading in summer. Sesleria caerulea’s adaptability to poor, dry soils and low maintenance requirements make it a favored choice for naturalistic and alpine garden designs. The plant has been appreciated in horticulture for decades for its elegant color and texture, contributing to ecological garden settings by supporting biodiversity and soil stability.
