Description
Portulacaria afra ‘Macrophylla’, commonly known as Large Leaf Elephant Bush, is a striking succulent shrub native to South Africa, admired for its thick, fleshy, rounded leaves that are significantly larger than those of the typical Portulacaria afra. This variety exhibits vigorous, woody growth with a dense, bushy habit, making it ideal for bonsai, container gardening, or as a drought-tolerant landscape specimen. The plant’s succulent leaves store water, enabling resilience in arid conditions, and its small, star-like pink flowers add subtle seasonal interest. Historically, Portulacaria afra has been valued by indigenous peoples for its edible leaves and uses in traditional medicine, as well as its ecological role in preventing soil erosion and restoring degraded land. Its adaptability to pruning and propagation contributes to its popularity among gardeners and landscapers seeking sustainable, low-maintenance greenery. This cultivar’s unique large foliage and robust growth habit distinguish it within the succulent and drought-tolerant plant community.
