Description
Pinus bungeana, commonly known as Lacebark Pine, is a distinctive and highly ornamental conifer native to northern and central China. Renowned for its unique, exfoliating bark that peels away in patches to reveal a mosaic of green, white, and brown hues, this pine offers year-round visual interest and textural contrast in landscapes. Typically growing to moderate heights of 30 to 50 feet, it features bluish-green, three-needle bundles and soft foliage that contributes to its elegant, airy appearance. Historically, Lacebark Pine has been valued in traditional Chinese gardens and has gained popularity in Western horticulture for its combination of hardiness and striking aesthetic appeal. It thrives in well-drained soils under full sun and is relatively adaptable to urban conditions, making it a favored specimen tree for both public and private gardens. Though not widely commercialized until recent decades, its unique bark and graceful growth habit have earned it recognition among conifer enthusiasts and landscape designers alike.
