Description
Picea pungens ‘St. Mary’s Broom’ is a distinctive cultivar of the Colorado Blue Spruce, renowned for its dense, compact growth habit and striking blue-green needles that provide year-round color and texture in the landscape. Originating as a naturally occurring witch’s broom mutation discovered near St. Mary’s Glacier in Colorado, this dwarf spruce typically grows as a small, rounded shrub rather than the towering tree form typical of its species. Its tight, bushy form makes it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, rock gardens, and mixed borders where a touch of evergreen color and structural interest is desired. The cultivar is valued for its hardiness and adaptability to a range of soil types and climatic conditions, thriving best in full sun with well-drained soil. ‘St. Mary’s Broom’ has been recognized for its unique growth form and ornamental appeal, making it a favored selection among landscapers and gardeners seeking a low-maintenance, visually compelling conifer.
