Description
Picea orientalis ‘Nigra Compacta’, commonly known as the Oriental Spruce, is a compact and slow-growing evergreen conifer prized for its dense, dark green to nearly black foliage that offers striking year-round color and texture in landscapes. Originating from the Caucasus region, this cultivar is a dwarf form of the native Oriental Spruce (Picea orientalis) and is valued for its tight, pyramidal habit, making it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, rock gardens, and small spaces. Its fine, needle-like leaves are softer than many other spruces, providing a unique tactile appeal. This variety thrives in well-drained soils with full sun to partial shade and demonstrates good tolerance to urban conditions, including pollution and cold temperatures. The ‘Nigra Compacta’ has also been recognized for its ornamental merit in garden design, appreciated for adding year-round structure and deep color contrast to mixed borders and evergreen collections.
