Description
Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’, commonly known as Bird’s Nest Spruce, is a unique and visually striking dwarf conifer prized for its distinctive flat-topped, nest-like growth habit. Originating as a cultivar of the Norway Spruce (Picea abies), this slow-growing evergreen forms a dense, low mound with a broad, spreading canopy that resembles a bird’s nest, making it an exceptional architectural focal point in gardens and landscaped spaces. Its soft blue-green needles and compact stature make it ideal for rock gardens, foundation plantings, and container culture. Historically, Picea abies has been widely valued in European forestry and ornamental horticulture, with the Bird’s Nest cultivar selected for its unusual growth form and ornamental appeal. This cultivar is also appreciated for its adaptability to a wide range of soil types and climates, demonstrating good tolerance to cold and urban conditions, enhancing its versatility in landscape design.
