Description
Persea americana ‘Reed’ is a noteworthy cultivar of the avocado tree, prized for its large, round fruit with a smooth, creamy texture and a rich, buttery flavor. Originating in California in the mid-20th century, the ‘Reed’ avocado was developed and released in 1948, named after the Reed family who propagated the cultivar. This variety is distinguished by its thick skin, which remains green even when ripe, and its late-season harvest period, usually from summer into early fall, extending the avocado season beyond the typical Hass variety. The tree itself is vigorous and upright, capable of reaching substantial size, and it thrives in warm, frost-free climates with well-drained soil. ‘Reed’ avocados are valued for their excellent storage qualities and resistance to certain diseases, making them a favorite among both commercial growers and home gardeners. This cultivar has been recognized by the California Avocado Society and has contributed significantly to the diversification of avocado production in the United States.
