Description
Pennisetum purpureum ‘Princess’ Purple Fountain Grass is a striking ornamental grass known for its graceful, arching foliage and vibrant purple-colored flower spikes that emerge in late summer through fall. This cultivar is a compact, non-invasive selection of the traditional Purple Fountain Grass, prized for its dense mounding habit and rich burgundy to deep purple leaves that add dynamic color and texture to landscape designs. Originating from tropical Africa, Pennisetum purpureum has been cultivated for centuries both as a forage crop and an ornamental due to its rapid growth and dramatic presence. ‘Princess’ distinguishes itself by its manageable size and enhanced ornamental appeal, making it ideal for borders, containers, or mass plantings in warm temperate to subtropical gardens. The plant thrives in full sun with well-drained soils and is valued for its drought tolerance and low maintenance requirements. Its distinctive bottlebrush-like flower plumes sway elegantly in the breeze, attracting pollinators and adding movement to garden spaces, encapsulating both functional and aesthetic qualities that have made it a favorite among landscapers and gardeners alike.
