Description
Pennisetum orientale ‘Fairy Tales’, commonly known as Oriental Fountain Grass, is a distinctive ornamental grass prized for its graceful, arching foliage and elegant flower spikes that create a soft, fountain-like effect in the garden. This cultivar is notable for its finely textured, narrow leaves that emerge with a fresh green color and often develop subtle purplish tones as the season progresses, enhancing its visual appeal. In late summer to early fall, it produces airy, bottlebrush-shaped flower plumes that shimmer with a silvery-pink hue, adding movement and lightness to mixed borders, containers, or naturalistic landscapes. Native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia, Pennisetum orientale has a history of use in ornamental horticulture dating back to the early 20th century, valued for its adaptability to a variety of soil types and its tolerance of drought once established. The ‘Fairy Tales’ selection has been recognized for its compact form and reliable performance, making it a favorite among gardeners seeking texture and subtle color contrast without aggressive spreading. This grass thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, contributing a delicate, airy aesthetic that complements both formal and informal garden designs.
