Description
Passiflora ‘Purple Tiger’ is a striking hybrid passionflower vine, developed in the mid-1990s by horticulturists Patrick Worley and Richard McCain through the crossbreeding of Passiflora phoenicea ‘Ruby Glow’ and Passiflora quadrangularis . This cultivar is renowned for its large, exotic flowers measuring up to 6 inches in diameter, featuring deep red petals and a corona of purple and white banded filaments . The vine exhibits a tropical appearance with winged stems and large, rounded waxy leaves, and it blooms from late spring to fall . ‘Purple Tiger’ is less aggressive than many other Passiflora species and may require assistance to attach to supports . While it can produce ornamental yellow fruit under ideal conditions, it is primarily cultivated for its ornamental value.
