Description
Muhlenbergia rigida, commonly known as Purple Muhly Grass, is a striking ornamental grass valued for its architectural form and vibrant coloration. Native to the southwestern United States and parts of Mexico, this warm-season perennial features clumping, upright foliage that transitions from deep green to a rich purple hue, especially under full sun exposure. In late summer to fall, it produces airy, cloud-like inflorescences of fine-textured, purplish-pink panicles that create a dramatic, smoky effect in the landscape, making it a favorite for adding texture and seasonal interest. Purple Muhly Grass is drought-tolerant and thrives in well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and low-maintenance gardens. Its adaptability and ornamental appeal have led to its widespread use in both residential and commercial landscaping as well as erosion control. This species is appreciated not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its ability to provide habitat and shelter for wildlife.
