Description
Muhlenbergia rigens, commonly known as Deer Grass, is a robust, clump-forming ornamental grass native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. Renowned for its graceful, arching stems that can reach heights of 3 to 5 feet, this warm-season perennial offers striking, fine-textured foliage that turns a rich golden-brown in the fall, adding year-round interest to landscapes. Deer Grass is highly valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in a variety of soil conditions, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and sustainable gardening. Its airy flower panicles emerge in late summer to early fall, creating a soft, billowing effect that attracts wildlife such as birds and beneficial insects. Historically, Indigenous peoples used Muhlenbergia rigens for basket weaving and other crafts, highlighting its cultural significance. This versatile grass is often utilized for erosion control, habitat restoration, and as an ornamental feature in naturalistic garden designs. Deer Grass is celebrated for its low maintenance requirements and adaptability, contributing to its popularity in native plant landscapes and ecological gardening.
