Description
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegatus,’ commonly known as Variegated Maidengrass, is a striking ornamental grass prized for its elegant arching foliage adorned with creamy white margins that create a vibrant contrast against its green blades. Native to East Asia, this deciduous perennial has been cultivated for centuries, gaining popularity in modern landscapes due to its graceful movement in the breeze and its ability to add texture and brightness to garden settings. Growing up to 5 to 7 feet tall, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and is highly tolerant of a variety of soil types, making it a versatile choice for borders, mass plantings, and naturalistic designs. The plumes that emerge in late summer to early fall are silvery and feathery, adding seasonal interest and wildlife value by attracting birds. Its variegated foliage not only enhances visual appeal year-round but also offers excellent contrast when combined with other perennials and shrubs. Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegatus’ is valued for both its ornamental qualities and its adaptability, making it a staple in contemporary and traditional gardens alike.
