Description
Leucadendron ‘Ebony’ Conebush is a striking evergreen shrub prized for its dramatic foliage and structural form, belonging to the Proteaceae family native to South Africa’s Cape Floristic Region. This cultivar is distinguished by its dark burgundy to nearly black bracts that contrast vividly against its green, lance-shaped leaves, offering year-round interest and a bold architectural presence in gardens and landscapes. Typically growing to about 4 to 6 feet tall, Leucadendron ‘Ebony’ thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and full sun, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and low-maintenance landscapes in USDA zones 9 through 11. Its flowering season in late winter to early spring produces cone-like flower heads that provide excellent cut flowers and long-lasting floral arrangements. Leucadendron ‘Ebony’ is valued not only for its ornamental beauty but also for its drought tolerance and adaptability, rooted in its native fynbos ecosystem known for fire-adapted species. This cultivar exemplifies the horticultural interest in South African proteas, which have been extensively hybridized and selected for garden performance. Recognized for its unique and dramatic coloration, Leucadendron ‘Ebony’ has become a favored specimen plant among landscapers seeking bold foliage and textural contrast.
