Description
Lavandula allardii, commonly known as Allard’s lavender, is a robust and aromatic evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region, prized for its compact growth habit and striking spikes of fragrant purple-blue flowers that bloom in mid to late summer. This lavender species is especially valued for its exceptional heat and drought tolerance, making it an ideal choice for xeriscaping and low-maintenance gardens in warm climates. It features narrow, silvery-gray foliage that not only adds a silvery texture to the landscape but also helps reduce water loss, enhancing its adaptability to dry conditions. Allardii lavender is frequently used in ornamental borders, herb gardens, and as a pollinator-friendly plant, attracting bees and butterflies. Its history traces back to selective breeding efforts aimed at developing lavenders that combine strong fragrance with increased resilience to heat and humidity. Recognized for its outstanding garden performance and ornamental appeal, Lavandula allardii continues to be a favorite among gardeners and landscapers seeking both beauty and durability in Mediterranean-style plantings.
