Description
Koeleria glauca, commonly known as Large Blue Hairgrass, is a striking ornamental grass valued for its fine-textured, steel-blue foliage that adds a cool, airy accent to garden landscapes. Native to sandy and dry habitats in Europe and Asia, this perennial grass thrives in well-drained soils and full sun, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, borders, and naturalistic plantings. Its graceful clumps reach heights of 12 to 24 inches, producing delicate, nodding flower spikes in early summer that enhance its ornamental appeal without overwhelming the overall form. The unique blue-gray color of its leaves sets it apart from many other grasses, offering year-round interest with its soft hue and tufted habit. Large Blue Hairgrass is not only drought tolerant and low maintenance but also deer resistant, making it a practical addition to sustainable and wildlife-friendly landscapes. This species has been noted for its adaptability and textural contrast in garden design, contributing to its popularity among landscape professionals and enthusiasts.
