Description
Juniperus scopulorum, commonly known as Rocky Mountain Juniper, is a hardy evergreen conifer native to the western United States, particularly thriving in the Rocky Mountain region. This species is prized for its dense, aromatic foliage of blue-green to dark green scale-like leaves, which provide year-round visual interest and excellent wildlife habitat. Rocky Mountain Juniper is well-adapted to a variety of soil types, including rocky and dry soils, making it an ideal choice for erosion control, windbreaks, and xeriscaping in landscapes. Its slow to moderate growth habit and tolerance to drought, cold temperatures, and urban pollution contribute to its popularity in both naturalistic and formal garden settings. The plant produces small, berry-like cones that mature to a bluish color, serving as a food source for birds and mammals. Known for its resilience and low maintenance requirements, Juniperus scopulorum has been widely used in restoration projects and ornamental horticulture. This versatile juniper is also appreciated for its ability to provide year-round structure and privacy in landscape designs.
