Description
Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltonii,’ commonly known as Blue Rug Juniper, is a low-growing, spreading evergreen groundcover prized for its striking silvery-blue foliage and dense mat-forming habit. Native to North America, this cultivar was developed for its exceptional cold hardiness and tolerance to poor, dry soils, making it an ideal choice for erosion control, rock gardens, and landscape foundations. Blue Rug Juniper typically grows to about 6 to 8 inches in height but can spread expansively up to 6 to 10 feet, creating a vibrant carpet of soft, needle-like leaves with a subtle bluish hue. Its ability to thrive in full sun and withstand drought conditions, coupled with minimal maintenance requirements, has made it a popular ornamental selection since its introduction. The plant also offers excellent winter interest, maintaining its vivid color throughout colder months. Recognized for its landscape versatility and durability, Blue Rug Juniper has been featured in numerous horticultural references for sustainable and low-water-use gardening.
