Description
Juncus effusus, commonly known as Soft Rush, is a versatile, clump-forming perennial native to wetlands across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. This hardy rush features cylindrical, smooth, bright green stems that grow upright, often reaching heights of 3 to 5 feet, making it a striking addition to water gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized landscapes. Soft Rush thrives in moist to wet soils, tolerating standing water and poor drainage, which makes it an excellent choice for erosion control and habitat restoration. Its unique texture and architectural form provide year-round interest, with dense, tufted growth that also offers shelter and nesting material for wildlife. Historically used for basketry and weaving, Juncus effusus has long been valued for both ecological and ornamental purposes. Its adaptability to varying moisture conditions and low maintenance requirements have made it a popular species in sustainable landscaping and ecological design projects.
