Description
Ilex crenata ‘Patti O Box’, commonly known as Japanese Holly, is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its dense, boxwood-like foliage and rounded form, making it an excellent choice for formal hedges, topiary, and foundation plantings. Native to Japan, Korea, and China, this species has long been valued in East Asian gardens for its adaptability and refined appearance. ‘Patti O Box’ is distinguished by its small, glossy, dark green leaves that maintain their vibrant color year-round, and its tidy growth habit that requires minimal pruning to retain a neat shape. Unlike traditional hollies, Japanese Holly produces inconspicuous flowers followed by small black berries, contributing to its ornamental appeal without the prickly leaves common to other holly species. This cultivar thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including urban environments, demonstrating excellent resilience and versatility in landscape design. Recognized for its superior uniformity and ease of maintenance, Ilex crenata ‘Patti O Box’ is a Proven Winners introduction appreciated by gardeners and landscapers alike for bringing evergreen structure and elegance to gardens and public spaces.
