Description
Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly known as Big Leaf Hydrangea, is a classic and widely cherished deciduous shrub prized for its large, lush, and vibrant flower heads that can range in color from white to shades of pink or blue depending on soil pH. The white Big Leaf Hydrangea variety features pristine, pure white blooms that add a timeless elegance and bright focal point to gardens and landscapes. Native to Japan, this species has a rich horticultural history dating back to its introduction in the 18th century to European gardens where it quickly gained popularity for its striking floral displays and adaptability. Characterized by its large, serrated, deep green leaves and mophead or lacecap flower forms, Hydrangea macrophylla thrives in partial shade with moist, well-drained soils. This plant’s ability to change bloom color in response to soil acidity is a hallmark trait, though the white cultivars typically retain their color regardless of soil pH. Hydrangea macrophylla is also valued for its long blooming period from early summer into fall. It has earned recognition in the gardening community for its ornamental appeal and versatility in landscape design, often featured in shade gardens, borders, and as specimen plants.
