Description
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue,’ commonly known as Big Leaf Hydrangea, is a classic and widely cherished deciduous shrub known for its large, vibrant blue flower heads that bloom from early summer to fall. Originating from Japan and introduced to Western gardens in the 19th century, this cultivar is prized for its mophead blossoms, which can shift in color intensity depending on soil pH—intense blue hues develop in acidic soils rich in aluminum. The plant features lush, deep green foliage that provides a lush backdrop to its rounded flower clusters, making it a standout in shade to part-shade garden settings. ‘Nikko Blue’ is valued not only for its ornamental appeal but also for its relatively compact growth habit and reliability in temperate climates. This hydrangea has been celebrated for its consistent bloom performance and vivid coloration, earning it recognition from various horticultural societies for garden merit and aesthetic appeal.
