Description
Heliotropium arborescens ‘Alba’, commonly known as white heliotrope, is a charming perennial shrub prized for its clusters of fragrant, pure white flowers that bloom profusely throughout the summer months. Native to Peru and cultivated extensively since the 18th century, this species is renowned for its sweet, vanilla-like scent that attracts pollinators such as butterflies and bees, making it a favorite in sensory and pollinator gardens. The plant features dark green, ovate leaves that provide a lush backdrop to its delicate blooms, which grow in dense, rounded clusters atop sturdy stems. White heliotrope thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, exhibiting good drought tolerance once established. Its compact, bushy habit and extended flowering period make it an excellent choice for borders, containers, and cottage gardens. Historically, heliotrope has been valued not only for its ornamental appeal but also for its use in perfumery due to its distinctive fragrance. This cultivar has gained recognition among gardeners for combining nostalgic charm with modern garden versatility.
