Description
Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’, commonly known as Golden Japanese Forest Grass, is a striking ornamental grass prized for its graceful, arching foliage that features vibrant golden-yellow leaves with subtle green stripes. Native to the mountainous woodlands of Japan, this deciduous perennial thrives in shaded to partially shaded environments, making it an excellent choice for adding texture and color to woodland gardens, shade borders, and container landscapes. Its clumping habit and slow growth rate contribute to its low maintenance appeal, while its cascading form adds dynamic movement and softness to garden designs. ‘Aureola’ is appreciated not only for its year-round visual interest—offering bright color in spring and summer and a soft, straw-like hue in fall and winter—but also for its adaptability to various soil types, provided they are well-drained and moist. This cultivar has been recognized by horticultural organizations for its ornamental value and ease of cultivation, earning accolades that highlight its status as a standout shade-loving grass in landscape plantings.
