Description
Gomphocarpus physocarpus, commonly known as Giant Swan Plant Milkweed, is a striking perennial native to southeast Africa, prized for its unique, balloon-like seed pods that resemble inflated swan necks. This fast-growing milkweed species features lance-shaped leaves and clusters of small, star-shaped greenish-white flowers that bloom in summer, providing an important nectar source for pollinators, especially monarch butterflies, whose larvae feed on its foliage. Beyond its ecological value, the plant’s unusual seed pods add ornamental interest to gardens and floral arrangements, making it a favorite among butterfly gardeners and native plant enthusiasts. Historically, Gomphocarpus physocarpus has been used not only for ornamental purposes but also for traditional medicinal uses in its native regions. Its adaptability to warm climates and tolerance for poor soils make it a resilient and low-maintenance addition to perennial borders and butterfly gardens.
