Description
Eryngium planum ‘Jade Frost’, commonly known as Sea Holly, is a striking perennial renowned for its architectural form and unique silvery-blue foliage and flowers. This cultivar features spiky, thistle-like flower heads with metallic blue-green bracts that shimmer with a frosted, almost iridescent sheen, creating a captivating contrast against its deeply lobed, steel-blue leaves. Native to Europe and western Asia, Eryngium planum has been cultivated for centuries not only for ornamental use but also for its drought tolerance and ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. ‘Jade Frost’ distinguishes itself with enhanced leaf coloration and a more compact habit compared to the species, making it an excellent choice for adding texture and color to perennial borders, rock gardens, and coastal landscapes. Its robust nature allows it to thrive in well-drained soils under full sun, and it exhibits excellent resistance to deer and rabbits. Recognized for its ornamental value, Sea Holly cultivars like ‘Jade Frost’ have garnered appreciation among gardeners and landscape professionals for their low maintenance requirements and long-lasting blooms that add visual interest from mid-summer into fall.
