Description
Dactylis glomerata, commonly known as orchard grass or cat grass, is a hardy, perennial cool-season grass native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. It is widely valued for its dense, tufted growth habit and rapid establishment, making it an excellent choice for soil stabilization, forage production, and ornamental purposes. Unique for its tall, arching stems topped with distinctive, clustered flower spikes, Dactylis glomerata thrives in a variety of soil types and climates, demonstrating remarkable drought tolerance and adaptability. Historically, it has been cultivated since ancient times as a key forage grass due to its high nutritional value and palatability for livestock. Additionally, it serves as an enriching treat for domestic cats when grown indoors as “cat grass,” supporting their digestion and well-being. Its robust growth and multi-functional uses continue to make it a staple in both agricultural and horticultural settings.
