Description
Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora ‘Columbus’ Montbretia is a vibrant hybrid bulbous perennial renowned for its striking, fiery orange-red flowers that bloom in mid to late summer, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. This cultivar is a product of hybridization between Crocosmia aurea and Crocosmia pottsii, resulting in robust, arching flower spikes that can reach heights of 3 to 4 feet, supported by sword-shaped, grass-like foliage. Originally cultivated in South Africa, Crocosmia has a rich horticultural history dating back to the 19th century when it was introduced to European gardens and subsequently hybridized to enhance flower color and plant vigor. ‘Columbus’ is particularly noted for its improved cold tolerance and prolific blooming compared to earlier Montbretia hybrids, making it a favorite in temperate gardens for adding bold color and movement. Its adaptability to a range of soil types and excellent garden performance have earned it recognition among gardeners and landscape professionals, contributing to the enduring popularity of Crocosmia hybrids in ornamental horticulture.
