Description
Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Soft Serve’ Gold, commonly known as Gold Sawara Cypress, is a striking evergreen conifer prized for its finely textured, soft, and feathery foliage that displays a vibrant golden-yellow color throughout the growing season. This cultivar is a slow-growing, compact, and versatile shrub that provides year-round interest, making it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, mixed borders, or container gardens. Originating from the Sawara cypress species native to Japan, ‘Soft Serve’ Gold is particularly valued for its unique, gentle twisting habit and soft needle-like leaves that are more pliable than typical cypresses, giving it a distinctive, almost fern-like appearance. It thrives best in well-drained soils with partial to full sun exposure and exhibits good tolerance to pruning, allowing for maintenance of its neat form. Its ornamental appeal and adaptability have made it a favorite among landscapers and gardeners seeking texture and color contrast in evergreen plantings. Although not widely documented for formal awards, the cultivar ‘Soft Serve’ Gold is celebrated in the horticultural community for its exceptional foliage color and softness compared to other Chamaecyparis pisifera varieties.
