Description
Chamaecyparis pisifera (Sawara false-cypress / Sawara cypress) is a fine-textured, needled evergreen conifer native to Japan (Honshū and Kyūshū) and valued in landscapes for its soft, lacy sprays of scale-like foliage and strong year-round structure. In the wild it can become a large tree, while in cultivation it’s often seen as a pyramidal evergreen that can broaden and open slightly with age. It grows best in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soils, and once established it can tolerate drought better than many people expect for a cypress. The species name pisifera (“pea-bearing”) refers to its small, round cones.
