Description
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Wells Special,’ commonly known as Hinoki Cypress, is a striking evergreen conifer prized for its dense, slow-growing form and uniquely textured, fan-shaped dark green foliage that exudes a rich, glossy appearance. Originating from Japan, the species has been cultivated for centuries and is highly valued in traditional Japanese gardens for its elegant structure and calming presence. The ‘Wells Special’ cultivar distinguishes itself with a slightly more compact and upright habit compared to the species, making it an excellent choice for landscape accents, foundation plantings, or bonsai applications. Its tolerance for a range of soil types and partial shade, combined with low maintenance requirements, adds to its appeal in both residential and formal garden settings. The plant’s refined, sculptural form and year-round interest have earned it recognition among garden enthusiasts and professionals for adding texture and architectural beauty to landscapes.
