Description
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Split Rock’ Hinoki Cypress is a distinctive evergreen conifer renowned for its textured, fan-like foliage and uniquely sculptural growth habit. Originating from Japan, the species has a long history of cultivation in traditional gardens for its elegant form and slow, manageable growth. The ‘Split Rock’ cultivar is particularly prized for its dense, irregular branches that create a layered, rock-like appearance, making it an excellent specimen plant or focal point in landscape design. Its dark green needles have a slightly glossy finish, adding year-round visual interest and a refined texture that contrasts well with flowering plants and other evergreens. Low-maintenance and resilient, this cultivar thrives in well-drained soils with partial to full sun exposure, and it is valued for its tolerance to urban conditions and moderate drought. The Hinoki Cypress has also garnered attention in horticultural circles for its ornamental appeal and structural versatility in bonsai and formal garden settings.
