Description
Chamaecyparis obtusa, commonly known as False Cypress or Hinoki Cypress, is a slow-growing evergreen conifer prized for its elegant, fan-shaped dark green foliage and its distinctive, textured bark. Native to Japan, this species has been cultivated for centuries and is highly valued in traditional Japanese gardens for its architectural form and serene presence. False Cypress thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soils, and prefers partial shade to full sun, making it a versatile choice for diverse landscape settings. Unique features include its dense, compact growth habit and its aromatic, resinous foliage, which adds year-round interest and can range from deep green to bronze hues depending on the cultivar and season. The tree’s natural pyramidal shape and maintenance-friendly size make it ideal for use as specimen plants, hedges, or accent pieces in both formal and informal garden designs. Chamaecyparis obtusa has been recognized by horticultural societies for its ornamental appeal and adaptability, maintaining a prominent place in both classic and contemporary garden palettes.
