Description
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Gracilis Compacta’, commonly known as False Cypress, is a distinctive dwarf conifer prized for its tightly compact, conical growth habit and soft, scale-like foliage that offers a lush, feathery texture year-round. Native to Japan, this cultivar is a slow-growing evergreen that showcases rich green needles which may take on a subtle bronze tint in winter, adding seasonal interest. Its unique dense and narrow form makes it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, rock gardens, or as a striking accent in mixed borders where space is limited. Historically, Chamaecyparis obtusa species have been valued in traditional Japanese gardens for their elegant structure and fine foliage, symbolizing longevity and resilience. The ‘Gracilis Compacta’ selection exemplifies these traits on a smaller scale, making it especially popular among gardeners seeking a refined, low-maintenance conifer. This cultivar has been recognized by various horticultural societies for its ornamental merit and adaptability in temperate landscapes.
