Description
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Aurea’, commonly known as Golden Hinoki Cypress, is a striking evergreen conifer celebrated for its unique, fan-shaped, bright golden-yellow foliage that adds vibrant color and texture to landscapes year-round. Native to Japan, this cultivar is a slow-growing, compact tree or shrub that typically reaches heights of 10 to 15 feet, making it ideal for specimen planting, rock gardens, or as an accent in mixed borders. The soft, scale-like leaves form dense sprays that create a layered, sculptural effect, while its naturally pyramidal habit lends architectural interest. Golden Hinoki Cypress thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and prefers partial shade to full sun, demonstrating excellent adaptability and low maintenance requirements. It is particularly valued for its drought tolerance once established and resistance to common pests and diseases. This cultivar’s unique golden foliage has garnered recognition among gardeners and landscapers for its ornamental appeal, often featured in Japanese-style gardens and contemporary landscape designs.
