Description
Cenchrus alopecuroides, commonly known as Fountain Grass, is a graceful ornamental grass prized for its arching, bamboo-like stems and bottlebrush-shaped flower spikes that resemble foxtails, creating a soft, flowing texture in garden landscapes. Native to East Asia and Australia, this perennial grass thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, displaying a lush green foliage that turns golden bronze in fall, adding seasonal interest. Fountain Grass is valued for its drought tolerance, low maintenance, and ability to provide movement and structure to mixed borders, containers, or naturalized garden settings. Its distinctive plumes emerge in late summer and persist into fall, attracting birds and providing winter interest. Cenchrus alopecuroides ‘Hameln’ is a popular cultivar noted for its compact habit and prolific flowering, recognized by horticultural societies for its ornamental merit. This species’ combination of elegant form, adaptability, and wildlife benefits makes it a favored choice in sustainable and modern landscape designs.
