Description
Casuarina glauca ‘Cousin It’, commonly known as Prostrate Swamp Oak, is a distinctive groundcover variety of the native Australian Swamp Oak. Renowned for its dense, finely textured, needle-like foliage that forms a lush, prostrate mat, this cultivar is widely appreciated for its unique cascading growth habit, making it an excellent choice for erosion control, slope stabilization, and low-maintenance landscaping. Its adaptability to a range of soil types, including saline and poorly drained areas, highlights its resilience in challenging environments. Historically, Casuarina species have been valued by Indigenous Australians for their durable timber and ecological benefits, such as nitrogen fixation and habitat provision. The ‘Cousin It’ cultivar stands out for its compact form and vigorous spread, which adds both textural interest and functional ground coverage in landscape designs. This plant has also garnered attention for its drought tolerance and salt spray resistance, traits that enhance its utility in coastal and arid garden settings.
