Description
Carex elata, commonly known as Tufted Sedge, is a robust, clump-forming perennial grass-like plant native to wetlands and damp habitats across Europe and parts of Asia. Renowned for its dense, tufted growth habit and striking, arching bright green foliage, it typically reaches heights of 2 to 3 feet, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing in moist garden areas, pond edges, or rain gardens. This sedge thrives in consistently wet soils and can even tolerate shallow standing water, contributing to erosion control and water filtration in landscape settings. Its unique texture and vertical form provide year-round interest, especially when paired with other moisture-loving plants. Historically valued in traditional landscaping for its durability and adaptability, Carex elata ‘Aurea,’ a popular golden-leaved cultivar, has gained recognition for its vibrant color and ornamental value. Tufted Sedge is also appreciated for attracting wildlife and supporting wetland ecosystems, aligning with sustainable gardening practices.
