Description
Calocedrus decurrens, commonly known as California incense cedar, is a distinctive evergreen conifer native to the western United States, particularly California and Oregon. Renowned for its graceful, pyramidal form and rich, aromatic foliage, this tree features scale-like, bright green leaves that emit a pleasant, cedar-like fragrance when crushed. Its bark is deeply furrowed and reddish-brown, adding textural interest to landscapes. Historically valued by Native American tribes for crafting tools, baskets, and ceremonial items, the California incense cedar also plays an important ecological role in forest habitats. It thrives in well-drained soils and is noted for its drought tolerance and adaptability to diverse climates, making it an excellent choice for both naturalistic and formal garden designs. This species is appreciated not only for its ornamental beauty but also for its durability and resistance to pests and diseases. California incense cedar has been recognized for its contribution to sustainable landscaping and conservation efforts in native plant gardening.
