Description
Begonia × T Rex ‘Ruby Slippers’ is a striking rex begonia cultivar prized for its dramatic foliage, which features large, asymmetrical leaves with a rich palette of deep ruby reds, purples, and subtle silvery undertones. This hybrid is a product of careful breeding aimed at enhancing the vivid coloration and unique textures characteristic of rex begonias, a group originally derived from Begonia rex, native to the forests of India and Myanmar. ‘Ruby Slippers’ displays a velvety leaf surface with prominent veins that create a quilted appearance, making it a standout ornamental plant for indoor collections and shaded garden beds. Rex begonias, including ‘Ruby Slippers,’ are valued for their shade tolerance and preference for humid environments, thriving in well-drained, organic-rich soil. This cultivar is also noted for its compact growth habit, making it suitable for container growing. While primarily grown for its foliage rather than flowers, it occasionally produces delicate blooms that do not detract from its leaf display. Rex begonias have a rich horticultural history, with breeders continuously selecting for enhanced foliage colors and patterns, and ‘Ruby Slippers’ is among the newer introductions that exemplify the vibrant diversity of this group. This cultivar has been recognized within horticultural circles for its exceptional foliage coloration and suitability as a striking houseplant or shaded accent.
