Description

Araucaria araucana, commonly known as the Monkey Puzzle tree, is an ancient evergreen conifer native to the temperate rainforests of south-central Chile and western Argentina. Renowned for its distinctive and striking appearance, the tree features a symmetrical, pyramidal shape with stiff, scale-like leaves arranged spirally around its branches, giving it a unique, almost prehistoric look. This slow-growing species can reach heights of up to 40 meters (130 feet) and is highly valued for its longevity, often living for more than a thousand years. The Monkey Puzzle’s name derives from the early 20th century when its unusual, spiky foliage was said to puzzle monkeys if they ever encountered it. Besides its ornamental appeal, Araucaria araucana produces edible seeds known as piñones, historically harvested and consumed by indigenous peoples. The tree is well-adapted to cool, moist climates and thrives in well-drained soils, making it a popular choice for collectors and specialty gardens worldwide. Its unique form and resilience have earned it recognition in botanical collections and arboreta, valued both for its horticultural interest and conservation importance as a living fossil species.
