Description
Abies fraseri, commonly known as Fraser Fir, is a native evergreen tree prized for its elegant pyramidal form, dense blue-green needles, and pleasant citrus-like fragrance when crushed. Indigenous to the Appalachian Mountains, particularly in the higher elevations of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, Fraser Fir thrives in cool, moist climates and well-drained acidic soils. This species is highly valued both as a landscape specimen and as a premium Christmas tree, renowned for its sturdy branches, excellent needle retention, and resistance to diseases such as balsam woolly adelgid compared to other firs. Historically, the Fraser Fir was first documented in the 19th century and named after botanist John Fraser. Its use in ornamental horticulture and holiday traditions has grown steadily, and it remains a favorite in both commercial forestry and residential planting for providing year-round greenery and structure in garden designs.
