Description
Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Avalanche’ Feather Reed Grass is a striking ornamental grass known for its elegant, upright form and distinctive variegated foliage featuring creamy white stripes along bright green blades. This cultivar is a sterile hybrid between Calamagrostis arundinacea and Calamagrostis epigejos, developed to combine the best traits of both parents—vigorous growth, strong, upright habit, and year-round visual interest. ‘Avalanche’ is prized for its architectural presence in the garden, creating vertical accents with plumes of feathery flower heads that emerge in early summer and persist into fall, adding texture and movement to landscapes. Its variegated leaves provide brightening contrast in mixed borders or as a stand-alone specimen, and it thrives in a wide range of soil types with full sun to partial shade. The development of ‘Avalanche’ represents a modern improvement in ornamental grasses, offering gardeners a low-maintenance, deer-resistant plant with exceptional ornamental appeal. Recognized for its garden performance and unique foliage, ‘Avalanche’ has garnered attention among landscape professionals and enthusiasts seeking both form and color in perennial grasses.
