Description
Bidens laevis, commonly known as Smooth Beggarticks, is a robust perennial native to wetlands and moist habitats across the southeastern United States. This species is distinguished by its tall stature, often reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet, with smooth, lance-shaped leaves and bright yellow daisy-like flowers featuring prominent central discs. Unique among Bidens species, Bidens laevis thrives in consistently wet soils, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, pond edges, and wetland restoration projects. Historically, Bidens species have been valued for their ecological role in supporting pollinators such as bees and butterflies due to their extended bloom period from late summer into fall. The plant’s ability to adapt to wet environments while providing vibrant floral displays underscores its ornamental and ecological significance. While specific awards for Bidens laevis are not commonly cited, its genus has been recognized for contributions to pollinator-friendly gardening and naturalistic landscape designs.
