Description
Ammophila breviligulata, commonly known as American beachgrass or Beech Grass, is a hardy, perennial grass native to the coastal dunes of the northeastern United States and Great Lakes region. Renowned for its exceptional ability to stabilize sandy soils, this grass features long, narrow, blue-green leaves and dense, fibrous rhizomes that form extensive underground networks, making it a key species for dune restoration and erosion control. Historically, Ammophila breviligulata has played a pivotal role in coastal ecosystem conservation due to its rapid growth and tolerance to harsh, salty, and windy environments. Its unique adaptation to shifting sands enables it to trap and accumulate sand, gradually building and maintaining dune structures that protect shorelines. The species has been widely studied and utilized in ecological restoration projects, earning recognition in the field of habitat preservation and environmental management for its vital role in maintaining coastal resilience.
