Description
Molinia caerulea ssp. arundinacea ‘Skyracer’, commonly known as Purple Moor Grass, is a striking ornamental grass prized for its tall, upright growth habit and graceful, arching flower panicles that emerge in late summer and persist into fall. This cultivar is especially noted for its slender, bright green foliage that turns golden bronze in autumn, providing multi-season interest in perennial borders and naturalistic landscapes. Native to the moist, acidic soils of European moorlands and heathlands, Purple Moor Grass has a long history of use in garden settings due to its adaptability and elegant form. ‘Skyracer’ distinguishes itself by its exceptional vertical stature, often reaching heights of 5 to 7 feet, making it ideal as a dramatic vertical accent or backdrop plant. The airy flower spikes, which start with a purplish hue and mature to a silvery tone, add a light, textural contrast to denser plantings. Recognized for its resilience and low maintenance requirements, Molinia caerulea ‘Skyracer’ is a favored choice among landscape designers seeking to introduce movement and seasonal color shifts.
