Description
Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Chameleon,’ commonly known as Little Bluestem Grass, is a striking native North American prairie grass celebrated for its vibrant seasonal color transitions and ornamental texture. This warm-season perennial forms dense clumps of fine, blue-green foliage that transform into a rich palette of reds, oranges, and purples in the fall, providing exceptional multi-season interest in landscapes. Its upright, slender blades and airy seed heads add movement and visual appeal, making it a favorite for naturalistic plantings, meadows, and erosion control. Historically valued by Indigenous peoples for basketry and its ecological role in prairie restoration, Little Bluestem is drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and supports local wildlife, including pollinators and birds. The ‘Chameleon’ cultivar is especially prized for its intense fall coloration and compact habit, making it ideal for gardens seeking a sustainable, native ornamental grass with year-round appeal.
