Description
Nolina microcarpa, commonly known as Bear Grass, is a striking, drought-tolerant perennial native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, prized for its architectural form and resilience. This robust plant features long, narrow, arching leaves with finely serrated edges that create a graceful, fountain-like silhouette, adding texture and movement to xeriscapes and rock gardens. Bear Grass thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for low-water landscapes and firewise gardening. Historically, Native American tribes utilized Nolina species for fiber and basketry, reflecting its importance beyond ornamental use. Its adaptability to harsh conditions and minimal maintenance requirements have made it a favored specimen for sustainable landscaping and erosion control. Enhanced by its slow growth and longevity, Bear Grass stands out as a unique and enduring addition to diverse garden settings.
